Pagan emptiness of a total society

A couple of strange statements in the morning media: Bishop Pell:

'"Pagan emptiness" and Western fears of the uncontrollable forces of nature had contributed to "hysteric and extreme claims" about global warming.

'In the past, pagans sacrificed animals and even humans in vain attempts to placate capricious and cruel gods. Today they demand a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.'
PM Howard:
'We should never allow envy to creep in if we are to have a total society in which we recognise that there are some people always that will be more heavily rewarded than others because of their skill or good fortune.'
Seeing calls for action on global warming as a form of paganism seems like a new form of religious delusion; I can think of no other description. And as for Man of Steel, the phrase 'total society' has a nasty ring of underlying authoritarianism (as with the infamous 'year zero' or 'final solution').
