Returning to a current theme, there seems to be growing acceptance of the use of the term 'fascism' to describe western political and social trends. The (admittedly communist) 'zine Revolution warns of a 'fascism [that] dresses itself in religious, indeed Christian, clothing'. Others, even on the Right, describe a 'vastly powerful Neo-Fascist Party state' emerging in the USA; while even letters to the editor in American newspapers decry their President's 'usurping of constitutional powers [that] puts the country in danger is a hallmark of fascism'. Libertarian capitalists (sic) reflect on the 'continued tightening of the federal fist under the premise of 'protecting us from terrorists' might be considered evidence of this rise of the new fascism'. The great diversity of political opinion converging on the accepted use of the same term, fascism, to describe the state of society demonstrates just how retrograde we have turned; barbarically so, in many cases.
