The SMH's list of the Top 50 TV shows watched by Australians is a sobering, damning indictment of a culture overwhelmed by America, mindless diversion, and sport. There are precisely two (2) Australian dramas in the entire list: (Against the Wind and A Town Like Alice) - and they're not even in the top 30, and not even made in the last 20 years. The rest is a sorry procession of sports, 'reality' tv, cheap Americana, and news events. This is one of the clearest indications yet of a media that is too cynical to support local production, a culture that is obsessed with trash and competitiveness, a viewing audience that seems to cringe at the notion that our own country could realise its creative potentials. Their writer concludes "it's not enough to say Australians are obsessed with sport and prefer comedy over tragedy", although a "deeper meaning" seems to escape them - probably because there is no depth to be understood.
