The detention and potential deportation of an anti-globalisation and peace activist visiting from the USA comes very close to demonstrating an abuse of Australian government powers (it's not the first time that the 'character requirements' of the Migration Act have been used this way either): it seems that the only offence this man has committed is dissent. This incident arouses a great deal of foreboding as to the extent that proposed new 'anti-terror' laws could also be abused, particularly with the apparent absence of statutory limitations and proper judicial review. As some commentators observed in the previous evening's news bulletins: Australia now has its first political prisoner (ironically, an American). Comments:
