A civil rights lawyer has warned that a recent ban by Melbourne City Council of works dealing with terrorism was about 'suppressing political statements': he sees that governments were 'testing the waters' about how much Australians 'will tolerate such measures'. With dissent 'rarely aired in the media' and opposition parties 'missing in action', he perceives arts venues as critical gatekeepers. An artist affected by the ban, Azlan McLennan, worries justifiably that 'anyone with dissenting views is ... potentially in a lot of trouble.' Comments:
