The Domino Theory just won't fade for some politicians. The Treasurer asserted to the media yesterday that 'many teachers were carrying left-wing ideological baggage from the 1970s', before escalating the observation into a moral panic over terrorism. Using foundation-less generalisations and comments to grab "media time", and perhaps impress Americans with the ability to fit the narrow ideological mould of a "neo-con", is becoming a character trait of the Federal Government's ministers. Costello's objection is that "if your teacher's carrying that [left] bias it tends to get passed on [...] Anti-Americanism can easily morph into anti-Westernism. Particularly you've seen that with terrorists..."One day a lefty, next, a terrorist - all the teacher's fault. His rant concludes with surrender to American power (without even a hint that Australia may have values of its own worth defending): "If the world is to have a hegemon, the modern United States is the kind of hegemon we would like to have". Of course, the right doesn't carry 'ideological baggage' - there are plenty of workers to carry it for them. Comments:
