Entitled to analysis (but not lunch or holidays) The Foreign Minister's interview performance last night on the 7.30 Report was very instructive in the language of politicians under pressure. Examples of misdirection, ridicule of critics, semantic hair splitting, and other tactics abound. However, the statement for which it most needs to be remembered is: ALEXANDER DOWNER: "...this is a free society. People are entitled to their analysis."In the face of blatant 'official' racism, manipulation of public fear, repression of worker's rights, homophobia, the truly ugly face of extreme conservatism is increasingly manifest. Downer's statement may be a type of safety-valve (to demonstrate they're apparently not as authoritarian as the government seems), but it may also serve as an acknowledgement of rights that could soon vanish.
