Would the largest supplier of weapons to developing nations have any interest in peace and stability in those regions, beyond rhetoric? It is reported today in the SMH that the United States has sold $A12.8 billion in arms to countries including those in the Near East and Asia in 2004, boosting worldwide sales to those countries (the 'primary buyers') to the highest amount since 2000, and increasing sales agreements to $A29.07 billion according to the Congressional Research Service. A vested interest in conflict could be directly inferred; the tone of State Deparment justification is extremely mild (they 'encourage restraint' by purchasing countries), almost unconcerned.
