A bonfire of democracy and human rights

The Australian government's statements over "terror threats" are becoming more contradictory and sickeningly authoritarian every day. For instance, yesterday the A-G was busily promoting "fear" of an attack, today he states he is "not aware of any specific advice that would indicate a threat is imminent in Australia". The treasurer, from the comfort of his cabinet position, also opines that their campaign "is going to take laws that will curtail the civil liberties of some people". How does one define or excise "some people", exactly? Obviously equality under law is no longer a given here. And the obscure Appeal of Conscience Foundation awarding Man of Steel a "World Statesman Award" is frankly a joke: to consider that man has "made Australia a beacon of democracy, religious freedom and human rights" borders on the delusional. In the light of immigration scandals, attacks on Islamic culture, and rorting of the electoral system (to name but a few of many issues), it is very difficult to see on what rational basis such an award honestly rests. A bonfire of democracy and human rights is more to the point: breathless minsterial carping over suspending civil liberties targetted largely at Muslims, and blatant fear-mongering points to the need for regime change, not indulgences.
