The power of persistance

For the old forests of Tasmania this morning comes what may be some of the best possible news: The Forest Industries Association is "worried a decision by a Japanese paper mill to stop buying woodchips from old-growth forests could be adopted by other international companies. This month, Mitsubishi published its new policy to only source woodchips from plantation forests." Its a shame the move was not as a result of corporate planning, or environmental responsibility from the government, though hopefully the absurdity of "jobs for life" for timber workers at the expense of the environment (and when few other Australian workers are allowed any claim to permanence in other industries) will pass. This move, if followed through, could be one of the most significant Green victories, and should serve to undercut or even end an arguably vicious campaign against environmentalists being waged in the courts and the media.

The "forest industry" has responded almost libellously with cries of "economic vandalism and treachery of extremist environmentalist groups", paradoxical behaviour in the face of defamation actions against Green groups and individuals by the same industry, effectively seeking to stifle debate and sway opinion by legalistic intimidation and threat. Any intelligent person knows where the "vandalism" is. Mitsubishi even knows it.
