A blanket statement from the PM following a certain court case that "we have to respect the justice system of other countries" leaves much disquiet in view of the type of "respect" Australia showed for the legal system in Iraq in 2003, or our current "respect" for the ability of Americans to detain and torture innocent-till-proven-guilty Australians without charge or trial. Where there are opportunities for political PR, human rights appears not to matter. This is particularly rank in the face of our government's consistent efforts to withdraw from UN Human Rights conventions for Refugees (and in other cases). Indeed it's challenging to even "respect" our own system in recent years, as it is now one that detains asylum seekers and terror suspects without trial, indefinitely, inter alia. Our culture seems to no longer have ethical values worth defending unless its politically expedient to do so. Comments:
