CNN via Netscape headlines its Vatican coverage "Despite Nazi Past, Pope Welcomed". And the SMH leaves us seriously wondering about current proclivities: "[...] the anti-war movement of the late 1960s and the student riots that convulsed Europe in 1968 turned him towards conservatism. He said it made him realise that, sometimes, there is no room for discussion. His biographer [...] said the Pope's experience under the Nazis helped form his view of the function of the church. 'Having seen fascism in action, Ratzinger today believes that the best antidote to political totalitarianism is ecclesiastical totalitarianism'.As long as its totalitarian enough, then, things will be fine.
