No despair for the Gonzo Doctor

Juan Thompson has spoken of his father and that untimely death:

"He'd gotten a good night's sleep, he was calm, he was relaxed, he was quite clear [...] He believed very much in controlling events rather than being controlled by them. I would hope that people see it in that light: That we'll never know why he chose this time, but that he had a good reason, and that it was completely consistent with his life, rather than an act of despair."
and:
"Part of the power of his writing is his disgust with the gap between the ideal and the reality of our society and our government".
I think a lot of serious writers would well understand that "disgust with the gap between the ideal and the reality" - indeed, it would almost suffice to say it is a foundation of countercultural writing over the last 50 years, and HST expressed it more originally and at times more confrontingly that most. I'm glad he did, and I'm also very heartened to see his son speaking so warmly and positively following an event that would make it extremely difficult to do so. "A fearless man, a warrior" - and obviously, I feel, HST succeeded as a father too.
