Racist Nazi Propaganda as News
The ABC's news online has hit a rare, but massively dangerous and offensive low point this morning, with their blithe coverage of a story from Newcastle: "A Sydney academic says it is thought Sudanese immigrants are behind a number of brawls and drug dealing in the Newcastle area" - not mentioning for several paragraphs that the "academic" is none other than "Dr Jim Saleam", "the public face of the far-right group National Action [who] went to jail for a shotgun attack on an African leader..."
That's right, former comrade of The Skull and many skinheads and nazis from the bad old days in Sydney of the 70's and 80's, somehow with the sheen of respectability from a "doctorate" (in what? from where?) that now labels him an "academic" rather than an idealogue content to use violence and fear to achieve his aims. A man from an extremist group who says of refugees "we're dealing with people that have come from utterly fractured societies where the use of the gun and the knife is the common way to settle disputes" - deliberately painting an alarmist view, when in fact he himself is one of the first to have reached for the gun. And the ABC seem content to help promulgate these fictions as "news".
Suddenly it seems it is respectable for the Australian media to run racist, extremist propaganda as "factual" news items, with barely an attempt to research or properly cover the subject matter. It is deeply offensive to one who has seen and felt first hand the impact of nazi sympathisers in the streets, and I am calling on everybody to write to the ABC immediately, and make some serious noise about this. To allow this kind of reporting to go unchallenged is to accelerate the degeneration of our society even further into the pits of fascism.
