Rumsfeld and Bush have created a new controversy over their use of a mechanical signature writer to sign letters of condolence to families of dead soldiers, and heightening the impression that the administration has been callous in its handling of the war. The "retired US army colonel turned writer" who broke the story says of the letters that its "like having it signed by a monkey". Rummy says that "in the interest of ensuring expeditious contact with grieving family members, I have directed that in the future I sign each letter". Yes, directed himself to sign a letter. God knows what would happen should he direct himself to think about the the loss of life from "his" war: perhaps the father who set fire to the van driven by US Marines who had come to tell him his son was killed in Iraq knows.
