Outsourcing Journalism

CNet is reporting via The Independent that Reuters journalists are "said to be" close to strike action over outsourcing of their reporting jobs to India. Their correspondent nicely works in a barb: "Reuters has been on a cost-cutting jihad for quite some time now" - before switching sides in almost the same breath to declare that "the fact is that the same global technology that allows companies to offshore call centers or software design applies to the 4th Estate as well". As usual the social cost of outsourcing is ignored, and technology will save the world's problems again (or at least save the editor's jobs if not their writers).
