The ancient Obelisk of Axum is being returned to Ethiopa. According to the ABC: "believed to be at least 2,000-years-old, the 24-metre obelisk was split into three and hauled off when Italian dictator Benito Mussolini invaded Ethiopia". Plundered by the fascists in 1937, it is one of Ethiopia's most cherished relics. The Sudan Tribune reports that in 2003 the 1,700-year-old Obelisk was "badly damaged by a lightning-strike that smashed the top of the monument". Another source has it that "Axum is home to the world's tallest obelisks. The stolen obelisk and others are carved with 'doors' and 'windows' and is thought, like Stonehenge, to have some solar or astronomical measuring role." [Recent research into archaeoacoustics also suggests there are sonic properties to many obelisks, the granite from which most are made is known to be quite resonant.]
