Small mercies, smaller ethics

The only really good news for democracy in this country [so far] from the recent Federal gerrymander election is that it is now impossible for the Nationals to hold on to the northern New South Wales seat of Richmond, thanks to an impressively large Green vote. The ABC reports the seat was conceded to the ALP this morning after being in National hands since 1996, ending the 3rd generation Anthony dynasty's grip on the fiefdom seat. I particularly enjoy the irony of Anthony's complaint to the press that there were "some clever tactics that deceived a lot of the voters" - yes, wasn't there rather.

If you're still not convinced that everything Man of Shite does and says is a travesty of leadership and ethics, look no further than another ABC item this morning which clearly outlines his sleight-of-hand over Tasmanian forests - it turns out the conservation areas announced as election policy are in fact precisely those areas which were never going to be logged in the first place and no more. There is no actual removal of forest from production coupes at all. [And that's definitely enough election reporting.]
