Passing observations

Reading back through the last month's postings here, it strikes home that all these recent stories in one way or another are about the elevation of uncompassionate behaviour to the central podium of our political, social, economic life. And when not caring about one's fellow humans or the consequences of one's actions is reflected in policy and behaviour politically, then we are in a fascist state by any reasonable definition, and the question now is how far will it go and for how long? Ladies and gentlemen, we are now approaching deep shit, and I do not apologise for pointing it out. Nor do I recommend or practise despair - making a point of simply caring about something [other than oneself] is now as strong a personal political action as marching in the streets.

To perhaps underline the state we are in one needs only to look at Man of Steel's recent electioneering. Today [October 5th] for instance he has announced that to secure right-wing christian votes, the Australian parliamentary process will be subjected to their agenda at every opportunity - the ABC reports he "has now formally agreed with Family First's demand for family impact statements to be included in Cabinet submissions". There is in the constitution of this country no specification that either christianity or so called "family values" are integral to our political life. The SMH today carries an item that underlines the damage to our democracy already in progress, let alone future prospects, in reporting that State and territory leaders have penned an unprecedented open letter warning that "the federal system of government could fall apart if the coalition is re-elected".
