Reuter's is highlighting, with predictable amusement, the growing interest in extreme forms of Body Modification - specifically suspension on meat-hooks. One main site for the practices offers enticing pictorial articles such as "a rod through my face", "Flesh Hook Suspension", "Cutting for beauty, cutting for orgasm, cutting for art", and a new take on bridal ceremonies in "My Wedding Day Suspension". The senses tend to recoil however at "Failed Suspension Attempt". And there are perhaps subconscious analogies with drug addiction offered in titles like "Satisfying myself with needles", "Hooked On A Feeling", "Relief through flesh and needles", and "Playing with Needles" - the fascination with attention and control permeates the drug addict's neuropathy in very similar ways, and perhaps opoid receptors in the brain are a key to both sets of behaviours. To some it is clearly more than a bizarre tribal entertainment, with one writer describing "The Quest for My Physical and Spiritual Perfection (an Exercise in Mind Control)". Comments:
