Vice is in the software-driven Heart

Another day of mapping the extremes of humanity's foibles reveals, on one hand, the US Patent Office granting Microsoft a patent for a "Method and apparatus for transmitting power and data using the human body" - in other words granting a large measure of exclusivity in control of the properties of our own bodies. Similar to the patent that exists for the Hepatitus C virus, which apparently assigns rights to a person/corporation who did not originate in any way the target of the patent claim, and continuing MS's apparent efforts to patent anything capable of being related to computing that isn't already claimed.

On the other, the Iranian Government's attempt to ban the hubble-bubble water pipes of long-standing tradition in the middle-east, as part of banning smoking in all public places. However, as an Iranian restauranteur sagely observes "people are scared of these men who quote the Koran to make law but vice is not in external things like water pipes. Vice is in your own heart."
