Keeping people in their place

The Australian Parliament continues to reach back in time for the white-picket culturally-homogenic fantasy that never truly existed with its decision to purchase and display much less work by contemporary artists. Coalition MPs complained that the art in the national Parliament was "too modern", prompting a 'review' that apparently sanctifies the right to not be challenged or stimulated by new ideas and innovation, and marginalising any sense of cultural progress or diversity. The Speaker's ongoing role in silencing dissent again demonstrates the contempt which "our" elites have for the Australian people. Meanwhile the Government's war on civil liberties continues with proposed extensions to Terrorism laws to make it illegal to communicate or meet with a member of banned organisation, being the latest in a long series of progressively more draconian afterthoughts to the original legislation. Now that the pretexts for the invasion of Irak have all been removed, it surely must be a matter of time before the remaining pretexts for the War on Truth, err Terror, also unravel just as nakedly. Or is it that the same "intelligence" that was so wrong on Irak is somehow immune from being wrong over Al-Qaeda?
