It's official: the world is getting crazier

A wide-ranging study of the prevalence of mental illnesses has found that more than 10 percent of people world-wide are likely to be afflicted. CNN Reports:

Mental illnesses including anxiety disorders and depression are common and under-treated in many developed and developing countries, with the highest rate found in the United States, according to a study of 14 countries.

Based on face-to-face diagnostic surveys in the homes of 60,463 adults, the study found that mental ailments affect more than 10 percent of people queried in more than half the countries surveyed.

Rates ranged from 26.4 percent of people in the United States to [ ... ] 4.7 percent in Nigeria.
The most common ailments were anxiety disorders, which include panic attacks, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder. Substantial proportions of serious cases receive no treatment at all in every country studied. In the light of the terrifyingly authoritarian, sadistic behaviour by 'terrorists' and governments alike which is increasingly sweeping the globe, the mindless semiotic soup of media and internet alike, increasing social fragmentation, the destruction of the environment physically and mentally, the prevalence of militaristic models for nearly everything, the artificiality of people's diets and lifestyles, the marked decline in education and literacy standards, the failures of leadership of religion and politician alike.... the facts are dismal and alarming but not surprising.
