No More Letters From America

The ABC is carrying a decent Obituary for Alastair Cooke, known for his 59 years of broadcasting the radio series "Letter from America".

His shows demonstrated a mastery of the form, and contributed extraordinary insights into social, cultural, poltical life:

"No matter what you're talking about - gardening, economic, murder - you're telling a story. If you say a dull sentence, people have a right to switch off."
[ One of his broadcasts, on the Middle East, inspired an audio montage composition which appeared on the 1981 "Aural Appetisers" Cassette EP by Sydney-based experimental outfit ismISM, produced by this editor. ]
