Email Follies

None of my 3 email providers can currently, reliably deliver an email, but bless their little business plans, they do manage to put ads in your face, even when you can't send or recieve messages.

My irate prediction is: most major sites will dump their free accounts in the next year. Seems that lack of service is being used to shake out customers ahead of this. All email will be charged for in future. Soon. Universities will begin to charge for email sent to non-university domains. Telstra will charge for email in bulk or sent to non-Telstra accounts, as will Hotmail, ISP's, etc. Free email will disappear within a few years altogether: strangely enough this is exactly the scenario put forward by Bill Gates last week as a "solution" to SPAM:

"The general idea is to force the sender of an e-mail to incur some kind of cost," says Cynthia Dwork, a senior Microsoft researcher."
