Interpreting the Semantics of 21st Century Globalised Capital

There is a very sane, thoughtful, and stimulating article at the Online Journal which provides a very useful "corporate vocabulary", eg [paraphrased slightly]:

*Globalization: corporate empire
*Economy of scale: bigger is better; goodbye small business operations
*Competition: who can put whom out of business the fastest
*Productivity: working harder, longer and for less pay and fewer benefits
*Franchisee: you are now a captive of a corporation

This is a good tell-it-like-it-is peice of commentary, and although written from an American perspective, just as easily fits with many other countries, such as Australia. [Or should that be "Austerica?"]. I would like to quote just one other par, to highlight the relevance:

"In fattening their bottom linesand the bigwigs' obscene salaries, bonuses, benefits and all manner of perksthey have plundered our natural resources, polluted our environment, stripped our industrial base and are now even sending white collar jobs offshore, where they are plundering other peoples' natural resources, polluting their environment, exploiting their labor and even threatening to have the corporate puppets in Washington make war on any nation that resists."
Thinking that globalisation is not affecting you? Count the number of family-owned businesses in your area, then count the number of multinationals, eg 7-11. Compare with 10 years ago.
