Iraqi Trade Unions Target of US Raid
More unreported news:
The Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions has made an urgent appeal for coverage of a raid by US troops a couple of days ago. Quote:
"On Saturday, dozens of US troops in ten armoured cars raided the IFTU temporary headquarters in Baghdad, smashing windows, seizing documents, and even tearing down posters and banners condemning terrorism. Eight IFTU leaders were arrested, but were released the following day, unharmed. No reason or explanation was given for the raid."
According to a blurb I found on a business site, the IFTU seeks to promote:
- workers rights
- a new democratic trade union movement actively involved in influencing economic and social policies and rebuilding civil society, together with other social movements
- the increased role of women at all levels within unions and civil society
- co-operation with international and regional labour movements and also to seek their help and cooperation to quip Iraqi working people with new Skills and knowledge
- special attention to social and economic needs of disabled people
It would be of interest to know whether the raid was an attempt at intimidation, a mistake, or a serious pursuit of terrorists. So far I can find no other coverage of this event, unsurprisingly.
