A current report confirms that a third of all Australian artists live below the poverty line: half earn just over $7,000 a year from their art.

Contrast that with the earnings and profile of sports people, and then contemplate the fact that more Australians participate in arts-related activity than sport. Cultural activity is increasingly marginalised here, the starving artist is not a character, but a feature of society it seems.
